I immediately thought of Kathryn ("Kitty") when the studio portrait was assigned. She simultaneously breaks the stereotypes both scientists and sorority girls hold. It was great to have her model for my first independent studio experience.
My original setup consisted of four lights, including the soft box as the main light, a fill light, a hair light and a background light. I adjusted the power several times during the session. I found that the fill light looked too hot off the wall, so I additionally experimented by using it as a main light source and using the soft box as a fill.
After taking multiple shots with the plain white background, I decided to use different colored gels to make the photograph more vibrant. I used dry ice and dyed water to make it look like a chemical reaction was occurring in the beakers.

I like the background color that you have created. It is really a good match with your topic. The chemical reactions are very cool too! You used stairs to take photos which is a very good idea to create photos from a different angle ( why I never thought of this??!!!).
ReplyDeleteAshley, I love the gels! The backgrounds look sweet! You'll have to teach me this one. The poses are a bit similar, so I think it was a good idea to vary your angles! Nice work lady!
ReplyDeleteThese are awesome! Great use of props, nice composition, lighting is perfect and I like the gels. You really captured her personality well. In the second photo it looks like her hair is a little blown out on the left and I would like to maybe see a tighter shot but these are great!
ReplyDeleteI think the first image is your strongest, for sure. I like the angle. I wish I could see more of the "chemical reaction" though. The top blends into her "lab coat" and I think if you backed up a bit and stopped your aperture down, it'd get more in focus. However, that's nitpicky, really. I dig it. Nice use of props and I dig the use of gels. Woo!
